After Tumbledown, with Trench foot and completely QE2 – on Board memories
      “
knackered, I was hoping we got get some rest, but a
Sgt (Backhurst!) completely shattered that. He was to set up
a POW Kitchen, and the git chose me, WTF, thanks mate!!!
Ajax Bay wasn’t all bad and we had a small group of
Argentinean prisoners as a fatigue party.
Through our short stay, we got to know these young
conscripts. Days before we had been programmed to kill them,
now we were sharing stories of life back at home over a coffee.
Then the penny dropped. These young soldiers really weren’t
different from us, but they, like us, were following orders.
After all the cock-ups (lack of equipment, ammunition,
food) we were so lucky to have the outcome we did. I’m proud
to be able to say, I played my small part in the conflict and
I will never forget the guys that didn’t come home with us.”

As you all know I’m the assassin in the group, (1 shot,
      “
1 hit, 0 kills), but what you may not know is that was the
only shot I fired in the war. For that one shot I was charged
with ‘Unpremeditated Attempted Manslaughter’ and an
ND. I was fined £250 (which I never paid), but was given a
£250 bonus for gallantry under fire (for doing f**k all), which
I never got. Pay Corp, love them.”

      “
bloody lot, feeling seasick and I was leading seaman in sea
cadets. Digging at top of San Carlos. Stand to! Jumping in trench:
bath time! Advance to Tumbledown in the dark. Soon lit up by
Navy and Artillery. Called to evacuate injured from the mountain,
hard slog. Wee break when someone handed me my mag off my
SMG! No mag on gun! Longest night of my life. Then daylight
and the shout came out. No, not cease fire, it was over.
After, sad news from home about Wee Alan who passed
      on the night of Tumbledown.”
