RLC Chef Update – April 2021
By WO1 (Conductor) Olly Rogers
Things happen very quickly between articles for
the magazine. The trade is as busy as ever and
continues to deploy overseas, as well as support
many UK commitments. Unlike most sectors of
work, feeding cannot stop under the shadow of
COVID. With socially distanced trade courses
making it difficult to manage, the team at the Food
Service Training Wing at Worthy Down have
worked tirelessly to ensure our people are achieving.
WO1 Olly Rogers, the Command Catering
Warrant Officer and Head of Trade for RLC
Chefs, was awarded the prestigious appointment
of Royal Logistic Corps Conductor in February
2021. (Editor, a great honour and very well deserved,
congratulations Olly.)
COVID has scuppered the plans for Exercise
ARMY SUSTAINER yet again. Originally
scheduled for June 2021, however, the team at

Exercise ARMY SUSTAINER is an extremely
example. The notion of giving the junior Chefs a
important calendar date for the trade and as such,

the new RLC strategy.
I am pleased to say that we have re-invigorated
the Wally Mackenzie Award, presented to an out- Socially distanced

standing trades person that has shown qualities
above and beyond in Continuous Professional
Development. The award will be presented every
6 months. Private Umit Rai was the first winner
in March 2021. He will be presented with a set of
chef knives, kindly donated by the Army Catering
Training Trust and a Conductors Coin. Private
Umit boarded against SNCO’s and was graded
unanimously high, a great achievement. Further
details may be found on page 28 of this edition.
A newly formed Chef trade Ethos Working
Group has been established, the brainchild of
WO1 (SSM) Ash Johnson – Divisional Catering Birthday cakes in Estonia We will be saying goodbye to some of our senior
WO1 cohort very soon as they move across to the
Officers’ Mess, paving the way for the next genera-
tion of Senior Chefs. We wish them all the very best
and hope that, although no longer a chef by trade,
they will always stay close to the profession. We no
longer have the luxury of Food Service Officers by
role, but we do have passionate Late Entry Officers
with a vested interest.
In the meantime, our Chefs are proving to be
adaptable and agile as always. The British Army
Culinary Arts Team are undertaking virtual events
in the Salon Culinaire competition, fingers crossed
for some medals. The future is looking promising
and our people are really making a difference,
Chefs continue to shine in every area.
